Want to learn baking? Here's a list of essential baking tools every beginner baker should have! #bakingforbeginners #howtostartbaking

Welcome to the 2nd post of BAKING FOR BEGINNERS series!

In the 1st post of BAKING FOR BEGINNERS series, we discussed the basics of baking and how you can start baking at home. Today we will see what are the basic tools you would need for starting baking.

Every work requires some tools and equipments. These tools and equipments are the basic necessities for doing that particular work.

Baking, just like cooking, needs various tools. Baking is a vast field and different levels of baking need different tools.

As here were are concerned with beginner bakers, I am sharing a list of tools that anyone who wants to start baking will need.

These tools are a must for a beginner baker. Don’t make the common mistake of using replacements of these tools for baking as that would eventually harm your baking projects.

Gradually your baking skills would grow and you will need some more baking tools. But as you are just starting baking, there’s no need to buy each and every baking related tool you see online or in the market. Don’t waste your money on those baking tools that you won’t even use (probably).

Buy these basic baking tools, start baking, improve your baking skills and then go ahead and buy advanced baking tools.

So, here’s the list of basic baking tools for beginner bakers –

  • 8PC Measuring Cup and Spoon Set

A set of measuring cup and spoon is one of the most important basic baking tools. This is one such baking tool that not only beginner but also expert baker needs.  Baking is all about the science of measurement. That’s why you need a measuring cup and spoon set.

Common mistake: One of the most common mistakes beginner bakers make is that they avoid buying this and simply use the regular spoons and cups they have in their house. DON’T DO THIS!

This mistake would totally ruin your baked recipe and you will not get expected results. Buy a proper measuring cup and spoon set and then only start baking!

BUY ON AMAZON

  • Electronic Kitchen Digital Weighing Scale

Another common measuring tool for baking. While measuring cups measure the ingredients by volume, a digital weighing scale measures the ingredients by their weight.

BUY ON AMAZON

WHICH ONE SHOULD I BUY (MEASURING CUPS AND SPOONS SET OR DIGITAL SCALE) OR BOTH?

It depends upon the recipes you will try while baking. Most of the recipes that you will find on Indian TV cooking shows, Indian websites and blogs or Indian magazines measures ingredients by their volume. That is, you should buy a measuring cup and spoon set.

But if you are interested in trying out recipes that weighs ingredients by their weight, then buy a digital scale.

I have both but I use measuring cup and spoon set way more than the digital scale.

So, it totally depends upon your baking style.

  • 6-inch Round cake tin or an 8-inch cake tin –

The most required baking tool, right?

You will need a cake tin for any type of cake you bake.

A 6-inch cake tin or an 8-inch cake tin is the perfect cake tin size for a beginner home baker.

A cake tin of size less than 6 inches would be too small even if you are baking for a small family whereas a cake tin with a size more than 8 inch would be too big for someone who is baking at home and is just starting baking.

Although cake tins come in various shapes, I feel a round cake tin is a good option to start with.

BUY 6 INCH CAKE TIN ON AMAZON

BUY 8 INCH CAKE TIN ON AMAZON

If you want to buy cake tins of different shapes, then this is a good option for you. It is a set of 3 cake tins – Round cake tin, heart-shaped cake tin and a flower-shaped cake tin.

BUY ON AMAZON

  • Parchment Paper

Another very important basic baking requirement. A parchment paper is used for lining a cake tin (before adding the cake batter) The parchment paper prevents the cake from sticking to the cake tin.

How to use a parchment paper in baking?

Roll out the parchment paper. Place the cake tin on top of the parchment paper and cut the parchment paper using scissors. Apply little oil on the base and sides of the cake tin and place the parchment paper in the cake tin. Add the cake batter and bake the cake.

Don’t try to remove the cake from the cake tin as soon as you take it out from the oven. The cake is still hot and due to the extra force, it might break from the middle. Wait for a few hours (or till the cake tin cools down) before taking out the cake from the cake tin.

After you have taken out the cake from the cake tin, carefully remove the parchment paper.

A parchment paper is used for lining cookie sheets, cake pans, baking pans, lasagne dishes etc. Reheat pizza, bake fish and French fries in the oven. Wrap cooked foods before reheating to keep them from drying out or wrap paneer, meat patty, cutlets etc. before keeping in the fridge to maintain moisture.

BUY ON AMAZON

  • Silicone Spatula And Pastry Brush Set

A silicone spatula is used for mixing cake batter and scraping the batter from the sides of the bowl. A brush is used for applying oil on the cake tin, applying oil on bread and burger buns (before baking them) and for other purposes.

Silicone Spatula And Pastry Brush Set Is Ideal For Scraping, Barbecues, Party Pies, Quiches, Tarts, Small Cakes Or Any Similar Uses.

BUY ON AMAZON

  • Oven Gloves

Oven gloves, as the name suggests, are used for holding hot cake tins and baking tray. Oven gloves make it easier to hold hot baking utensils.

These are heat Proof, Comfortable Wear, Absorbent, Strong Grip and Long Lasting.

BUY ON AMAZON

  • Loaf Tin

A loaf tin is needed for baking loaf cakes as well as breads. It’s good to have at least two different shaped cake tins (Just for the variety purpose). So, you can buy a loaf tin and a round/square/heart shaped cake tin.

BUY ON AMAZON

  • Muffin Tin

A muffin tin is needed for baking muffins and cupcakes. A muffin tin comes in different sizes – 6 cup muffin tin, 12 cup muffin tin, 24 cup muffin tin etc.

I’ll recommend you to go for either 6 cup muffin tin or a 12 cup muffin tin. These two are ideal for a beginner baker.

BUY 6 CUP MUFFIN TIN ON AMAZON

BUY 12 CUP MUFFIN TIN ON AMAZON

  • Hand Mixer

A hand mixer is used for beating butter and sugar, whipping cake batter, whipping cream, whipping frosting etc.

It is a very important baking tool.

Can I start baking without a hand mixer?

Honestly Yes!

You can simply use a hand whisk or a spatula for mixing cake batter. But a hand mixer does all the above-mentioned tasks in a much better way. For example, a hand mixer beats butter in a less amount of time and in a better way than a hand whisk or a spatula. If you will gradually start decorating cakes, later on, a hand mixer is a must!

BUY ON AMAZON

  • Glass Mixing Bowl

Capacity: 400ml, 900ml, 1400ml

Mixing bowls are needed for preparing the cake batter. I won’t recommend baking in these bowls. It is better to use aluminium or non stick baking tins. But these mixing bowls are ideal for preparing the batter.

BUY ON AMAZON

These are some of the basic baking tools that you should have before you start baking.
