One of the most loved cake all around the world is chocolate cake. Be it birthday party or an anniversary party; a large number of people prefer a chocolate cake.
I also personally like to bake chocolate cake a lot. This is also because the most demanded cake by my sister is a chocolate cake. So that is one such cake flavor that I bake most of the time.
This whole wheat chocolate cake recipe came to my mind after I experimented with this atta cake recipe. This is a simple, one bowl cake and is prepared using atta (whole wheat flour). This was an instant hit in my house and everyone loved it.
That’s when I thought that I should also publish an atta chocolate cake recipe. So, here it is!
Eggless Whole Wheat Chocolate Cake
This is an eggless recipe. I have used buttermilk as an egg substitute in this recipe. Although buttermilk is available in the markets and you can buy that from there, I have used homemade buttermilk in this eggless whole wheat chocolate cake recipe. And it is very easy to make buttermilk at home. All you need is milk and white vinegar.
The process is to add vinegar into the milk, stir and leave this for five to ten minutes. You will see that the milk would curdle and this shows that your homemade buttermilk is ready.
I have provided the exact measurements (of milk and white vinegar) needed for this recipe. So follow the ingredients measurement properly and you will get perfect results.
Whole Wheat Chocolate Cake Ingredients
The ingredients are very basic. For this whole wheat chocolate cake recipe, you will need atta (whole wheat flour), cocoa powder, baking powder, sugar, oil, milk, essence and white vinegar.
I have used powdered sugar in the recipe. For making powdered sugar, just blend the regular granulated sugar in a blender jar. Measure the powdered sugar and use it for making the cake.
You can also use granulated sugar but then make sure to mix it properly (and for a longer time than mentioned in the recipe) so that the sugar melts and gets mixed with oil.
You can simply use vanilla essence in this recipe. I have also used vanilla essence. Or if you have chocolate essence, then go for it.
One Bowl Whole Wheat Chocolate Cake
This is a one bowl whole wheat chocolate cake recipe.This means that you only need a bowl and a spatula (or a hand whisk) for making this cake. You will add all the ingredients, one by one; mix them slowly till everything is incorporated and bake the cake. That’s it!
The only thing that you will have to do separately is making homemade buttermilk, as that requires you to mix milk and white vinegar together in a separate bowl.
Rest all the ingredients can be added, one by one, in the same bowl. Mix them. And bake the cake.
So, this is an easy recipe. It uses easily available ingredients. Therefore, definitely try this recipe. :p

You can even serve this cake to your kids (without telling them that it is made up of atta (whole wheat). No one would come to know that it is made of atta (whole wheat) and not maida (All purpose flour).

Whole wheat chocolate cake - A healthier version of the most loved cake all around the world : Chocolate Cake
- 3/4 Cup Whole Wheat Flour (Atta)
- 1/4 Cup Cocoa Powder
- 1 teaspoon Baking Powder
- 1/2 Cup Oil
- 1/2 Cup + 2 Tablespoon Sugar
- 1/2 Cup Milk
- 1 1/1 Teaspoon White Vinegar
- 1 Teaspoon Vanilla Essence
Preheat the oven at 180 C / 350 F. Grease a 6 inch cake tin.
In a small bowl, add milk and vinegar. Mix. Keep aside for 5 minutes.
In a separate bowl, add oil and sugar. Mix for 1-2 minutes.
Now add the milk mixture. Mix nicely.
Add vanilla essence and mix.
Keep a sieve on top of the bowl. Add atta (Whole wheat flour), cocoa powder and baking powder.
Using a spatula or a hand whisk, mix nicely. Don't over mix the batter.
If the batter is too thick, add around 2-3 tablespoons of milk.
Add the cake batter into the cake tin.
Bake at 180 C/ 350 F for 30-35 minutes or till a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake tin comes out clean.
